LAST TIME OUT: The Hillcats lost to the Pelicans 9-6 last night and lost the series 2-1...3B Nick Vickerson put the Pelicans on top with a solo shot in the second inning...The Pelicans added two more runs with three straight extra-base hits in the third including an RBI triple for Chris Garia...Lynchburg responded with two runs in the third on four hits highlighted by 3B Kevin Ahrens' RBI double...RHP Wes Parsonsgave up six runs, five earned, in five innings for the Hillcats...Trailing 6-3 going in the fifth, the Hillcats rallied to tie the score...C Tyler Tewell hit his second home run of the night, a two-run blast, to even the score...Myrtle Beach took the lead back in the seventh, scoring two runs off RHP Zach Jadofsky (3-3), who suffered the loss...RHP Benino Pruneda surrendered another Pelicans run in the eighth and the Hillcats never came back as they only managed on hit over the final four innings, once the bullpen took over...The Hillcats fell to 7-4 in the second half but are still in first place in the Northern Division...
VS. CAROLINA: The Hillcats are 2-4 against the Mudcats this season...They were swept in three games at home May 5-7, and then took two of three at Five County Stadium May 12-14 ...Hillcats pitching holds a 7.00 ERA in the season series...They gave up a season-high 13 runs in Zebulon on May 13 in a 13-5 loss...The Mudcats are hitting .309 against the Hillcats and C Jeremy Lucas is playing especially well batting .350 with two home runs, a triple, six RBIs, and five runs scored...
GLAD TO BE BACK ON THAT ROAD AGAIN: Last night, the Hillcats fell to 21-22 at home, but they are 20-18 on the road, which is the second-best road record in the league only to the Pelicans who boast the second-best road record in all of Minor League Baseball...Meanwhile, their opponents tonight, the Carolina Mudcats, hold a home record of just 17-23, tied for the worst home record in the circuit with the Frederick Keys (16-22)...
IF NOT...FOR THE BIRDS: The Hillcats suffered their first series loss in the second half last night...They have only lost four of their last 14 series, and three of those have come against the Pelicans...Their most impressive series run this season followed the the three game sweep to Carolina, from May 8 - June 2, when the 'Cats went 5-0-1 in series play, with an overall record of 18-8 during that stretch...
DOES EVERYBODY KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS?: C Tyler Tewellwent 2-for-4 with two home runs, three RBIs, and two runs scored last night...It was the first multi-home run game of Tewell's career...Drafted in the 14th round in 2012, the Charlotte, NC native is playing in his third professional season...He now has 16 career home runs...His nine last year with Low-A Rome ranked second on the team...Now on a five-game hitting streak, batting .368 (7-for-19) with seven RBIs and four runs scored during this streak...Tewell's average is up to .285 from .273 because of this stretch...
ENCORE ENCORE: RHPLucas Simsthrew seven no-hit innings last time he took the mound last Thursday night in Wilmington...RHP Alex Wilson finished the game for him and completed the nine-inning no-hitter...Sims earned the win allowing one unearned run...It was his first win since May 22 ...He held an 8.80 ERA in June until the no-hit start...In May he went 4-0 with a 3.82 ERA, but in June he went 1-2 with a 6.04 ERA...He also walked 14 in 22.1 innings last month, after having walked just 17 in 61.2 innings through April and May...
AHRENS' TURNAROUND JUNE: 3B Kevin Ahrens went 2-for-4 last night with a double and two RBIs...He leads the league with 25 doubles this season and is on a six game hitting streak...Batting .600 (15-for-25) with eight doubles, five RBIs, and six runs scored during this streak, and his average has shot up 31 points, from .258 to .289, the highest his batting average has been all season...He batted .402 (33-for-82) in June after hitting .241 through April and May...Last night did snap his four-game run scored streak...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: LHP Shawn Morimandowas selected in the 19th round of the 2011 draft by the Indians out of Ocean Lakes High School (VA)...Born in Canandaigua, NY, but grew up in Virginia Beach where he still resides...Had committed to play at East Carolina University before deciding to accept a reported $350,000 signing bonus from the Indians...As a senior at Ocean Lakes, he set single-season records for strikeouts in a season (115) and in a game (15)...He also holds the school records for home runs (6) and RBI (31) in a season...Made his pro debut with the Rookie-level Arizona League Indians in 2011...Pitched in just three games (6ip, 5h, 3r, 2er, 2bb, 8k)...Spent 2012 with Low-A Lake County (7-6, 3.59)...Made 22 starts, one complete game...Struck out just 69 and walked 52 in 110.1 innings...Made 27 starts for the Mudcats last year, and went 8-13 with a 3.73 ERA and led the league in losses...In one start against the Hillcats this season, he won while giving up three runs, on three hits in five inning...He walked three and struck out three...Since that start on May 13, he has thrown seven consecutive quality starts, never giving up more than two runs...His ERA has fallen from 4.19 to 3.00...Hasn't lost since May 8 at Salem ...
