Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Salem, VA - The Salem Red Sox bested Lynchburg for the second straight night at LewisGale Field Wednesday night by a score of 5-2. The Hillcats fell behind early for the fourth straight game in this young 2011 season. Salem right fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. Hazelbaker did it again in the third inning, launching another solo shot off of Lynchburg âs starter, Willie Kempf. It was 2-0 Salem after three innings of play.
Lynchburg bounced back with runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Todd Cunningham singled to lead off the fourth. Joey Terdoslavich later came up with runners at the corners and one away. He hit a sharp ground ball off the glove of third baseman Kolbrin Vitek, and Cunningham would come around to score the Hillcats first run. Vitek would be charged with an error and the run would be unearned. Then in the fifth, the Hillcats scored a run without the benefit of a hit. Andrelton Simmons reached base on a hit by pitch and advance to third on a ground out by Phil Gosselin. A wild pitch moved Simmons to third. Then another infield error would lead to the Hillcats second run. This time it was shortstop Derrik Gibson who booted a ball as he ranged up the middle with two outs.
David Hale entered the game for the Hillcats in the bottom of the fifth and relinquished the lead back to the home team After sitting down the first two batters, Hale gave up three consecutive hits and two earned runs making it 4-2 in favor of the Red Sox.
Salem added one more insurance run in the sixth when Gibson singled in David Mailman from second base. Mailman had double to lead off the inning. The Red Sox led 5-2 after six frames and that âs how it would finish.
Ryan Pressly (1-0) earned the win for Salem tossing five innings allowing two runs, none earned, on four hits. David Hale (0-1) threw two innings of relief and took the loss giving up 3 earned runs on five hits. Cesar Cabral recorded a two-inning save, his first of the season, as he pitched the eighth and ninth without allowing a run.
Salem improves to 3-1 with the victory, while the Hillcats fall to 1-3 in 2011. The two teams do battle again Thursday night in Salem at 7:05 pm when the Hillcats try to avoid an early sweep and the fourth straight loss.
