Lumberjacks Fall to Madison 4-3 in Overtime, Capitols Tie Eastern Conference Final Series 1-1

MUSKEGON, Mich. - The Muskegon Lumberjacks fell in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final after dropping their second contest to the Madison Capitols in overtime by a final score of 4-to-3 on Saturday, May 7, 2022, from Mercy Health Arena. The Lumberjacks received goals from Jack Williams, Jake Richard, and Nathan McBrayer, but it would be the Capitols to storm back from two goals down, force overtime, and pot the game-winner by Jake Dunlap. With the loss, the Capitols have now tied the best-of-five series 1-1 going into Monday night's Game 3 in Madison.

1st Period

For the sixth playoff game in a row, the Lumberjacks drew first blood, this time from captain Jack Williams 18 seconds into the contest. Williams' third playoff goal was assisted by Joey Larson to give Muskegon the early 1-to-0 lead in the first period.

The Capitols would respond at 3:50 of the first period with Reid Pabich to even the score 1-to-1. Pabich's second goal of the playoffs was assisted by Luke Mittelstadt and Ben Dexheimer.

With 6.9 seconds left in the period, Jake Richard found the back of the net to give the Jacks the 2-to-1 lead. Richard's second goal of the playoffs was assisted by Joey Larson at 19:53 of the first period.

After the first period in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final, the Lumberjacks took the 2-to-1 lead into the dressing room.

2nd Period

At 3:43 of the second period, Muskegon defenseman found the back of the net to give the Lumberjacks the 3-to-1 lead. McBrayer's second career playoff goal was unassisted.

Madison would pull within one at 14:40 of the middle period after a goal from Ben Dexheimer to make it a 3-to-2 score, still in favor of Muskegon. Dexheimer's first goal of the playoffs was assisted by Brendan Lamb and Barrett Brooks.

At the end of 40 minutes in Game 2, the Lumberjacks remained in front by a goal taking a 3-to-2 lead into the final period of regulation.

3rd Period

At 2:30 of the third period, Madison's Matthew McGroarty tied the game 3-to-3 for the Capitols. McGroarty's first playoff goal was assisted by Barrett Brooks to level the score 3-to-3.

Overtime

Just 1:21 into the overtime session, Jake Dunlap ended the game in favor of Madison to give the Capitols the 4-to-3 victory. Dunlap's sixth goal of the postseason was assisted by Reid Pabich to tie the series 1-1.

On Deck

The Lumberjacks will head out to Madison, Wisc. for Games 3 and 4 of the Eastern Conference Final on Monday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 10, respectively, from Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton, Wisc. with faceoff slated for 8:00 pm EDT both nights. If the series ends up going the distance, Game 5 (if necessary) will be back in Muskegon on Thursday, May 12 at 7:00 pm EDT from Mercy Health Arena. The Eastern Conference Final is a best-of-five format, meaning a team needs to win three games in the series to advance to the Clark Cup Final.

2022 Camp Dates

The Muskegon Lumberjacks have announced their 2022 Camp Dates for the upcoming season. Registration is now open for the Prospect 07-08 Camp, which runs from May 27-29, 2022 at Mercy Health Arena in downtown Muskegon. Goalie camp is scheduled for June 4-5, 2022, at the Lakeshore Sports Centre. Main Camp, which includes free agents and prospects, will run June 9-11, with Final Main Camp on June 12-15, both at Mercy Health Arena.
