Madison Capitols News Release
Jake Dunlap's overtime winner 1:21 into the extra frame secures the 4-3 victory for Madison and evens the Eastern Conference Finals at 1-1. The Capitols now head back to Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena for games 3 and 4.
"I thought we finally woke up about halfway through that game when it was 3-1," Caps head coach Tommy Upton said. "We weren't truly playing to our identity through game 1 and through the first half of game 2 tonight. We woke up and started to play our brand of hockey, tempo and pace. We played with passion and we showed a lot of resiliency tonight."
For the second time in three games, the Caps erased to 2-goal deficit en route to winning a massive game. 3:43 into the 2nd period, Madison found themselves trailing 3-1. The Caps slowly started to battle back as blueliner Ben Dexheimer pulled Madison within one when he walked a puck in low, toe dragged around a Lumberjacks defender and buried far-side to make it 3-2, Jacks with 5:20 to play in the 2nd period. 2:30 into the 3rd period, Matthew McGroarty received a centering pass from Barrett Brooks and slid the equalizer 5-hole to help get the game into overtime.
Going into their first OT game of the postseason, the Caps didn't take long to win it as Jake Dunlap grabbed a loose puck on the side wall and cut into the middle of the ice to fire home the game winner top shelf.
"Chabrier got the puck up the Pabich and Pabich made a great chip to open space. I used my speed to cut to the middle and shoot the puck and it happened to go in," Dunlap said.
The series now moves back to Madison where the Capitols will have a chance to end the series at home in games 3 and 4. Game 3 goes down Monday, May 9th and next Tuesday's tilt will be May 10th.
