Bangor Lumberjacks News Release

Bangor, ME- The Bangor Lumberjacks, proud members of the Northeast League, announced today that they have cleared roster spots for the upcoming 2003 season by releasing pitchers Bobby Cowan, Keith Makowski, and catcher Travis Silver.

Cowan, a right-handed pitcher, tossed 80.2 innings for the Lumberjacks and collected a 6-3 record with a 5.62 ERA. Bobby appeared in 28 games, starting 11, and struck out 34 while walking 27. Makowski was signed during the playoffs due to a rash of injuries to Lumberjack pitchers, but never saw any action.

"We felt we needed to clear roster spots for players who will be released from major league organizations. With spring training going on, more and more players will be let go form the big league clubs and this will enable us to sign them for the 2003 season," stated Lumberjacks General Manager Curt Jacey.

Silver, the Lumberjacks backup catcher for part of last season hit .071 in 14 at-bats before announcing his retirement. The Lumberjacks picked him up from the Albany-Colonie (NY) Diamond Dogs midway through the season.

The Lumberjacks open the 2003 campaign on the road against the Allentown (PA) Ambassadors on Thursday, May 22, but return to Bangor for the home opener on Friday, May 30 at 7 PM against the New Jersey Jackals at Mahaney Diamond.
