North Shore Spirit News Release

The North Shore Spirit extended their winning streak to three games Monday night with a 6-5 victory over the New Haven County Cutters.

Kevin Rival (1-0) worked two innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first win in a Spirit uniform. Cory Willey (4-2) suffered the loss for the Cutters.

New Haven opened the scoring in the top of the second with a pair of runs. After Thomari Story-Harden leadoff with an infield single, Derrick Gibson launched a two-run homerun down the line in left.

The Spirit got on the board in the third. With one out, BJ Weed singled and stole second. Vic Davilla followed with a ringing RBI double off the centerfield wall.

North Shore would grab the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Alex Trezza crushed his league leading 13th homerun of the season, a solo-shot to straight away center. Morgan Brown would add an RBI basehit, giving the Spirit the 3-2 advantage.

New Haven stole the momentum back an inning later. Marcus Nettles and Horace Lawrence each chipped in RBI singles. With half the ballgame in the books, the Cutters found themselves out in front, 5-3.

The scored stayed that way until the bottom of seventh. Brown led off with a double into the right field corner. Weed followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners with no outs. The Spirit then pulled off a rare double-steal to pull within a single run. After Weed swiped third, a Ryan Bethel sacrifice fly knotted the score at five.

In the eighth, Sabino assumed the role of hero. With two outs and Jeff Brooks at second, Sabino lifted a fly ball over the out-stretched glove of Orlando Encarnacion in right for a game-winning RBI triple.

The teams resume their three-game set tomorrow night at Fraser Field. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Joey Siak gets the start for the Spirit while the Cutters will send Jarrett Stawarz to the mound.
