Lugnuts Take Second Straight

LANSING - The Lansing Lugnuts continued the trend that they set on Opening Night by scoring early and letting the bullpen do the rest as they took a 7-3 decision over the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays at Oldsmobile Park Friday night.

The Lugnuts scratched across three runs in the first inning for the second consecutive game. Chris Gutierrez ripped a double down the left field line to start the rally. After Jacob Butler reached on a walk, Joey Metropoulos singled home Gutierrez to give the Lugnuts a 1-0 lead. Brian Pettway follwed with a double to left field that plated Butler and Metropoulos to push the lead to 3-0.

After scoring twice in the second, Southwest Michigan (0-2) tied the game in the fourth inning when Christian Lopez singled him home to tie the game at 3-3.

Lansing (2-0) broke the tie in the fifth when Gutierrez singled to right to score Jesus Gonzalez to put the Lugnuts up for good.

Kristian Bell (1-0) picked up the win for the Lugnuts after tossing five innings of three run baseball. Billy Carnline and Scott Roy combined to keep the Devil Rays scoreless for the final four frames, extending the bullpen's season opening streak of scoreless baseball to eight innings.

Jacob McGee (0-1) took the loss for the Rays after he allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

The Lugnuts and Devil Rays will continue their season opening four game set tomorrow in Battle Creek at C.O. Brown Stadium. Russ Savickas will take the hill for Lansing, while Wade Davis has the honors for Southwest Michigan. First pitch is slated for 2:05 p.m.
