LANSING, Mich. - Gustavo Pierre drove in five runs, including a go-ahead double in the eighth inning that led the Lansing Lugnuts (19-23) to their sixth straight win, an 8-5 triumph over the Lake County Captains (15-27) on Tuesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The Lugnuts have now won 10 of their last 12 games.

Down 5-4 entering the home half of the eighth inning, Pierre ripped a double to left field scoring Christian Lopes and pinch-runner Carlos Ramirez, giving Lansing a 6-5 lead. Two batters later, Chris Hawkins pulled a double down the right field line, scoring Pierre. Emilio Guerrero's single scored Hawkins to give the Lugs their fourth run of the frame and cap off the scoring.

Pierre finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of extra-base hits. His third inning double came with the bases loaded, clearing them with a line drive to deep right-center field, giving the Lugnuts a 4-1 lead at the time. His five runs driven in tied his season-high.

The Captains would jump ahead 5-4 after plating runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but the eighth inning proved to be too much for Lake County to overcome.

Lugnuts starter Taylor Cole threw five innings in the no-decision. He allowed four runs - all earned - on seven hits. Cole struck out one while issuing four walks.

Tucker Donahue (Win, 1-1) received the win after tossing a scoreless inning in the top of the eighth. Wil Browning came on and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure his second save of the season.

On the mound for the Captains, right-hander Dylan Baker rebounded from his poor start last time he faced the Lugnuts. Baker threw six innings on Tuesday, allowing four runs - three of which were earned - on five total hits. He walked three and struck out two.

Josh Martin (Loss, 2-3) took the loss out of the bullpen for Lake County, tossing 1.1 innings but allowing all four of the Lugnuts runs in the eighth frame.

Game two of the three-game series comes Wednesday morning on a Grand Slam School Day at Cooley Law School Stadium. With first pitch set for 10:35 a.m., the Lugs will send right-hander Ben White (1-3, 4.08) against Captains' southpaw Ryan Merritt (2-3, 3.35).
