Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING - Luis Perez went 5-for-5 and Myron Leslie was 2-3 as the Kane County Cougars(43-45, 12-7) used a four run first inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead and then hung on to beat the Lugnuts(46-42, 9-10) by a 6-3 score in front of 2,840 fans on Monday night at Oldsmobile Park. The Cougars win also gave them a series victory, three games to one and gave them a season series victory over Lansing five games to three.

Perez's first homer of the season with one out in the first inning opened the scoring off Lansing starter Po-Hsuan Keng(2-3) and started a sequence of four straight hits off the Lugnuts right hander who was making his second start of the season. Javier Herrera followed with a double to left and Eddie Kim's single plated Herrera. Leslie followed with a single and after a wild pitch by Keng, Raul Padron's sacrifice fly scored Kim to make it 3-0. Nick Blasi, a late lineup switch, then singled to left to score Leslie and close out the scoring in the first inning.

The Cougars got their lead up to 6-0 in the third inning when Kim singled to right and scored on a double by Leslie, who later scored on a fielding error by Curtis Thigpen. Keng lasted only three innings, giving up eight hits and six runs to take the loss. The Cougars didn't score after the third inning thanks to stellar relief efforts by Jordan Timm, Aaron Tressler and Joey McLaughlin, who held Kane County to four hits over the final six innings.

Lansing finally got on the board in the fourth off Cougar starter Ryan Ford(8-4). With two outs, Luke Hetherington singled and went to second on a single by David Hicks. Ryan Klosterman walked to load the bases and Hetherington and Hicks scored when Kim mishandled Yuber Rodriguez's pop up along the first base line, making the lead 6-2.

Ford went six innings, allowing three unearned runs and three hits while issuing four walks to get the victory in front of more than 40 family and friends from his nearby home of Rochester, Michigan.

Lansing got the game's final run in the sixth when Charlie Anderson led off with a walk and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Cliff Pennington. The Lugnuts stranded nine runners on the evening, including five in the final four innings.

Luke Hetherington and David Hicks each collected a pair of hits in a losing effort for Lansing. Marcus McBeth worked the ninth for his first save for Kane County.

Lansing will now take Tuesday off for the Major League All-Star Game and returns to action on Wednesday evening in Battle Creek as they open a three-game series with Southwest Michigan. Russ Savickas(4-2, 3.66) makes the start for the Lugnuts against Devil Rays starter Jino Gonzalez(3-4, 4.24). Game time is 7:05 p.m. from C.O. Brown Stadium.
