Lubbock Renegades News Release

LUBBOCK, TX: April 24, 2007 - The inaugural Lubbock Renegades of the arenafootball2 completed several transactions late Monday as they look to improve on an 0-3 start Saturday night against the Texas Copperheads. The Renegades and the Birmingham, Alabama based Alabama Steeldogs completed a trade with an exchange of quarterbacks. Justin Midgett was traded to Alabama in return for Robert Kent. Lubbock also completed a deal with the Youngstown, Ohio based Mahoning Valley Thunder by receiving defensive back Chris Smith in return for future considerations. In addition, Lubbock has placed wide receiver Johnny Journey and defensive back Rance Olison on re-assignment.

Kent, who is 6'4" 221 pounds, comes to the Renegades in his second season of af2 action. In three games with the Steeldogs this season, the 26 year-old Kent has thrown for 462 yards, going 44 of 88 with 2 interceptions and 5 touchdowns. He is versatile quarterback that currently ranks ninth in the af2 in rushing yards with 62 on 12 carries and rushing yards per carry with an average of 5.2 per rushing attempt. Kent has three rushing touchdowns this season. Last season, Kent led the Steeldogs with 14 rushing touchdowns (6th in the af2) on 44 carries for 159 yards. He completed 111 of 189 pass attempts last season in five starts with 1,361 yards gained. Kent registered 24 passing touchdowns and surrendered just five interceptions. He turned pro in 2004 by signing as a free agent with the Tennessee Titans and went two-for-four passing for 15 yards against Cleveland in their opening preseason contest prior to his release. In 2005, he attended training camp with the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes. Kent, an All-State product out of Gentry High School in Indianola, Mississippi, attended Jackson State University, where he has been deemed as the finest passer to ever play for the program. He started since his freshman year, and in 45 games, he completed 825 of 1,539 passes for 11,797 yards, 104 touchdowns, 58 interceptions, averaging 262.16 yards per game. All the numbers stand as school career records. His 11,797 yards passing rank fourth in NCAA Division I-AA history, topped only by Steve McNair of Alcorn State (14,496 yards, 1991-94), Willie Totten of Mississippi Valley (12,711 yards, 1982-85) and Marcus Brady of Cal-State, Northridge (12,479 yards, 1998-2001). Joined McNair (119), Totten (139) and Brady (109) as the only players in Division I-AA history to throw for over 100 touchdowns in a career. Kent added 996 yards and 21 scores on 442 carries (2.3 avg.). His 12,793 yards in total offense is surpassed only by McNair (16,823), Brady (13,095) and Totten (13,007) in Division I-AA history. The 125 touchdowns he is responsible for rank third in Division I-AA history behind Totten (157) and McNair (152).

Smith comes to the Hub City from another inaugural franchise, as he appeared in one game with the Mahoning Valley Thunder. The 24 year-old 6'1" 190-pound defensive back is playing in his first season in the af2. He was a two-year letterman at Southeastern Louisiana, where he picked up significant workout numbers with a 4.27 40-yard dash and 330-pound bench press, which led the Lions defensive backs. Prior to college, the Nashville, Tennessee native, prepped at Antioch High School.

Midgett departs Lubbock after three starts as the Renegades signal caller. He completed 55 passes on 117 attempts for 680 yards. The Punta Gorda, Florida native completed 10 passes for touchdowns and ran for an additional score, but he co-leads the af2 in interceptions with 8. His struggles came behind an offensive line that ranks tied for fifth in the af2 with just two sacks allowed. Johnny Journey and Rance Olison leave after just two games with the Renegades. Journey was in the starting offensive unit at Spokane and made three catches for 25 yards. He also had a four-yard rush on the season. Olison, a product out of Texas A&M - Kingsville, combined for 1.5 tackles (1 solo) in the two games he appeared in.

The Renegades return to action this Saturday night with a 7 p.m. kickoff hosting the Cypress, Texas based Texas Copperheads. Individual ticket and corporate sponsorship information is available by contacting the Renegades office at (806) 744-5858.
