Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
Jeremy Symington stopped 39 of 40 shots to lead the lead the Lubbock Cotton Kings past the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 3-1 in front of a sold out Dodge Arena (5,600) Tuesday night.
After a scoreless first period in which the Bees out-shot the Kings 14-8, Bill Newson got things going 3:00 into the second period with his fourth shorthanded goal of the season and team leading 29th overall. Paul Fioroni tied things up 2:25 later, picking up a Vinnie Jonasson rebound and putting it past Bees goaltender Jeff Levy.
Heading into the third period tied 1-1, Lubbock continued living off goaltender Jeremy Symington. He made save after save keeping the Bees off the board and then the Cotton Kings gave Symington some offensive support with 3:01 remaining. Jonasson was able to work the puck on the top of the left slot a slide the puck through Levy and give the Cotton Kings a 2-1 lead. They would add an empty net goal with 17-seconds remaining to close out the contest.
Symington picked up the win in net, stopping 39 of 40 shots. The Bees (0 for 6) and Kings (0 for 8) were each unsuccessful on their power play opportunities. The loss snapped a streak of 12 consecutive games on home ice without a regulation loss. The game was Rio Grande Valley's final regular season home game and places their inaugural season home record at 17-9-6.
With the loss, the Bees (30-23-8) will now play the Laredo Bucks in the first round of the playoffs. The projected dates are Games 1 and 2 in Laredo on March 19 and 20th, Games 3 and 4 (if needed) at the Dodge Arena on March 27 and 28th and an "if needed" Game 5 in Laredo on March 30th.
The Bees still have three regular season games remaining, all on the road, and the next Bees contest will be a playoff preview Friday night in Laredo.
