Charleston Lowgators News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (November 6) The Charleston Lowgators of the National Basketball Development League selected 10 players in the 2003 NBDL Draft on Thursday night. The team’s roster now stands at 17, with training camp beginning on Saturday, November 8.

After hours of film study and listening to recommendations, head coach Doug Marty and Assistant Kelvin Upshaw drafted players that would mesh with the four returnees from last year’s team and that would fit well into the Lowgators style of play.

"I am very happy with the way our draft turned out," said Marty. "We drafted a solid group of guys, I’m ready to get on the court and see what they can do."

The Lowgators selected forward Rolan Roberts (6-6, 230 lbs.) out of Southern Illinois with the 5th pick in the first round. Roberts played overseas last season in Turkey and France and averaged 14 points and 11 rebounds per game. Charleston took former University of Hawaii shooting guard Carl English (6-5, 200 lbs.) with their second round selection.

Marty said, "Roberts is a very strong inside player who can rebound and block shots. English is a good shooter and is an extremely hard-working player."

The Lowgators roster includes the 10 drafted players, four returning players, two allocated players and one player selected from the local tryout. Charleston must shave their roster down to 10 by November 20.

The Huntsville Flight selected former Miami Heat center Ken Johnson (6-11, 240 lbs.) with the first overall pick. There were a total of four first round selections with NBA experience.
