Dazzle Select Asselin in First Round of NBDL Draft

November 6, 2003 - NBA G League (G League)
Roanoke Dazzle News Release

Roanoke, Va., November 6, 2003 – With the fourth pick in the first round of the 2003 NBDL Draft, the Roanoke Dazzle selected Josh Asselin, a 6-foot-11 center from Michigan. Asselin participated in NBA training camp with the Golden State Warriors in 2003.

"Josh brings toughness and athleticism to the team," Head Coach Kent Davison said. "He's athletic, shoots the ball well from 18-20 feet and runs the floor really well for a guy his size. I worked a big-man camp in Florida this summer and got a chance to watch him all week against a lot of NBA type players. He really held his own."

Asselin finished the 2002-03 season playing for Stade Clermontois in the French Pro B League, averaging 11.8 ppg and 5.2 rpg in 29 games. He finished his four-year career fifth on Michigan's all-time list for blocked shots with 136, scored in double figures 37 times and secured ten or more rebounds 11 times. Asselin had eight career double-doubles.

The Dazzle's other selections include 7-foot-2 Chris Christofferesen from Oregon (2nd- round selection), forward Demario Jones from Central Oklahoma (3rd-round selection), rookie point guard Marque Perry from St. Louis (4th-round selection), returning guard Mike King from George Washington (7th-round selection) and Kevin Owens from Monmouth (8th-round selection), brother of Dazzle returning forward Geoff Owens.

"We had specific needs to fill this year in the draft," Davison said. "We needed big men to be able to control the block and rebound the ball. We needed athletes, and we filled that with two or three guys that can really jump. Lastly, we needed to find a young point guard (Marque Perry) to come in and learn our system and be able to learn pro basketball from a veteran like Cory Alexander."

The Dazzle will open its training camp at Booker T. Washington Gym on Saturday. The 10 draft picks will join the Dazzle's four returning players – Mikki Moore, Cory Alexander, Geoff Owens and George Williams- and the Dazzle's two "allocated players" – Curtis Staples and Adam Hall- for the team's first practice at 9 a.m. Final roster cuts will not be made until Thursday, November 20. Final rosters will consist of at least one "allocation player" and two "first-year professional players."

The Dazzle opens its regular season on Saturday, November 22 with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff against Fayetteville at the Crown Coliseum. The Dazzle's home opener is Sunday, November 30 with a 4 p.m. tipoff at the Roanoke Civic Center. For Dazzle ticket information, call (540) 266-1000.
