Louisville City FC to Battle Charleston in Huge Match
August 20, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Louisville City FC News Release
Louisville, KY (August 20, 2015) -- A battle between two clubs at the top of the table sets the stage for one of the biggest matches to be played at Louisville Slugger Field. Louisville City FC (12-4-6, 42 points) is currently sitting second in the Eastern Conference, while the Charleston Battery (9-4-9, 36 points) enter Saturday's 7:30 kickoff with the possibility of being able to tie Louisville in points, depending on their result on Thursday versus Saint Louis FC.
Louisville City is coming off one of the most intense matches of the season. A back-and-forth affair against the Tulsa Roughnecks provided a number of heart-in-throat moments for supporters of both clubs. Lou City drew first blood with a free kick for the ages off the left boot of Aodhan Quinn. The ball rose over the wall and descended towards goal before banging of the underside of the bar, leaving the Tulsa keeper helpless.
Quinn's goal would make ESPN SportsCenter's Top Ten, coming in as the fifth best play of the sports world last Saturday.
Tulsa would equalize before halftime and would have the lead in the 76th minute, but Niall McCabe would give Louisville the equalizer just three minutes after when Ilija Ilic settled it for the Irishman to smash it into the net.
Charleston will be coming off of a quick turn around with that Thursday night showdown with STLFC. A Charleston win can bring them within three points of Louisville City FC. Currently, the Battery have just one win in five matches. A 1-0 victory over last placed Wilmington back on July 18th is the last time the black and yellow have collected all three points.
The match on Thursday will be their second consecutive bout with Saint Louis. The two clubs finished in a 1-1 draw last Saturday thanks to a Heviel Cordoves goal in the 89th minute to allow Charleston to steal a point from a game where Saint Louis had two players sent off for the second straight game.
Louisville City FC is still only five points behind Rochester for the regular season title, and the potential for a second place battle only adds to the drama heading into Louisville's return to Slugger Field. Fans will want to get their tickets in advance to avoid the lines on matchday. Visit LouisvilleCityFC.com/tickets to do so today.
Just a few days later, Louisville City FC will host a Major League Soccer team for the first time. Orlando City SC comes to Slugger Field on Tuesday for a 7:30 PM kickoff. Fans can also get tickets for this match by visiting LouisvilleCityFC.com/tickets.
