Saint Louis FC News Release
ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis FC rallied from two goals down to defeat Charleston Battery 3-2 Thursday night in front of 4,604 fans at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
"To go down two goals early against one of the better teams in the league, and then to sustain a level of effort and commitment to the result is absolutely huge," Head Coach Dale Schilly said. "The guys worked their tails off. I'm very proud."
With the win, STL FC improves to 6-9-8 (26 pts.) while Charleston falls to 9-5-9 (36 pts.).
After the sides played to a 1-1 draw in Charleston, S.C., last weekend, the Battery got off to a fast start with two goals in the opening 20 minutes of the match.
Heviel Cordoves got the visitors on the board in the 10th minute, beating Alec Kann at the far post to complete a Charleston counter attack. Eight minutes later, Justin Portillo doubled the Battery's lead from the penalty spot after a STL FC foul in the box.
Saint Louis would respond, however, as Jamiel Hardware earned a penalty for the hosts in the 33rd minute. Mike Ambersley stepped up and dispatched the ensuing spot kick.
The STL FC comeback would be made complete late in the second half.
The teams traded chances through the second 45 minutes, and it was Sam Fink who headed home the equalizer in the 83rd minute off a Patrick Doody cross. It was Fink's third goal of the season.
Saint Louis FC made its last substitution just before the 90th minute, bringing on Aaron Horton. The move paid immediate dividends when STL FC earned a set piece outside of the Charleston penalty area in the final moments of the match.
Fellow sub Mike Roach swung in the free kick, and the ball fell to Horton, who lashed home from 10 yards. STL FC players sprinted the length of the field to celebrate with its supporters' group, the St. Louligans.
"Aaron is a high-octane guy that outworks everyone around him," Schilly added. "He's the perfect guy to come in late, get inside the 18, and finish goals."
Saint Louis FC will now travel to Richmond, Va., to face Richmond Kickers on Saturday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM CT.
