Louisiana Squeaks by Columbus, 6-4

The Louisiana IceGators and the Columbus Cottonmouths were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Louisiana made the most of its opportunities and won, 6-4.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Benjamin Rubin's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

The IceGators got the win behind a great game by Jake Hauswirth, who had one goal and three assists. Hauswirth scored 14:23 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Jeremy Boyer assisted on the tally.

Louisiana's penalty kill excelled, as the IceGators gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays.

Louisiana's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game the IceGators had been spending in the box. Louisiana stifled Columbus' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. With 27 shots on target during the contest, the IceGators exceeded the 24.5 shots they average per game this year. Louisiana bested its season scoring average. The IceGators average 3.0 goals per game.

Louisiana also got points from Adam Stuart, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Louisiana included Bret Peppler and Kirk Byczynski, who scored one goal each. More assists for Louisiana came via Tanner Burton, who had two and Jason Cohen and Mike MacIntyre, who contributed one each.

The Cottonmouths were led by Shawn Bates, who grabbed three goals. Columbus also had goals scored by Andy Willigar and Matt Gingera, who each put in one.

Marco De Filippo made 24 saves for Louisiana on 28 shots. The IceGators registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Shannon Szabados rejected 21 shots on goal for Columbus. The Cottonmouths ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major.
