PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Pensacola Ice Flyers (16-4-4) scored four goals in a 4:26 span in the first period and used that to beat the Mississippi RiverKings (9-12-2), 7-1, at the Pensacola Bay Center Friday night.
The Ice Flyers barrage began at 8:25 of the first while they were on the power play. Drew Baker passed to Nick Lazorko, who fired a shot from the right circle to beat Peter Di Salvo for a 1-0 lead. Just 31 seconds later the Ice Flyers made it 2-0 when Michael Budd finished off a pass play with Brett Lutes. Just a few minutes later Corey Banfield extended the lead to 3-0 when he one-timed a shot from the right circle on an Ice Flyers counterattack. That forced Di Salvo from the game after allowing three goals on the first five shots. Adam Courchaine replaced him and Pensacola scored on the first shot against him when Lutes picked up his first of the game.
The RiverKings got their only goal of the game with three minutes to play in the first. Andrew Randazzo took a point shot, which deflected off the right post. Leo Thomas was there to swipe in the rebound to make it 4-1 Ice Flyers heading into the second period. To start the second Di Salvo was reinserted as the goaltender.
Lutes gave the Ice Flyers their four-goal lead back at 8:22 of the second, when he delayed then snapped a shot under the crossbar from the high slot, making it 5-1 Pensacola. The Ice Flyers kept their foot on the gas and scored twice more in the third period. Adam Pawlick started it with his first of the game a 1:55 of the third. Jason Fabian rounded out the scoring with a deflection in the slot at 15:20, giving the Ice Flyers a 7-1 win.
The seven goals against is the most the RiverKings have allowed in a game this season. The previous high was five, set Oct. 25 in a 5-1 loss to Knoxville.
The RiverKings are back home Saturday, Jan. 3 for Elvis Night. The RiverKings will wear special Elvis jerseys, which will be auctioned off after the game to benefit the RiverKings ReachOut Fund. There will also be performances by the Ice Sisters during the game and kids in costume get in for free.
