Louisiana IceGators News Release
LAFAYETTE, LA -The Louisiana IceGators (8-32) took to the ice Friday night to take on one of their biggest rivals, the Pensacola Ice Flyers (23-12). The Ice Flyers found themselves near the top of the league and they played like it. The Ice Flyers were able to ground the IceGators and won 4-1.
The first period began with the Ice Flyers capitalizing early, in fact on their first shot on goal. Brett Parker (PEN) scored his 11th goal of the season 1:05 into the game. The âGators started to put pressure on Thomas Lee (PEN), Ice Flyer's goalie. Louisiana has a streak of six straight shots on goal but Lee saved all of them. During the first period the âGators out shot the Ice Flyers 16-13 but fell behind 2-0 when Chris Wilson scored his 27th goal of the season.
The second period began with Pensacola putting the pressure on the Archie Henderson (LOU), IceGators' goalie. In the first six minutes the Ice Flyers outshot the IceGators 9-0. With 49 seconds remaining in the period the Ice Flyers added to their lead, when Chris Wilson (PEN) scored his 28th goal of the season and put the Ice Flyers up 3-0.
The IceGators found themselves in a 3-0 hole needing to create offense in a hurry. The newest member of the IceGators Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn scored his first goal with the IceGators and cut into the 3-0 lead. The âGators had a great chance to score with 11:53 left in the game when Jason Hill (LOU) had two shots on goal as well as Versteeg-Lytwyn. However, none of these were able to sneak past Lee. Louisiana had another big opportunity with 7:03 left in the game when Cameron Sault and Ryan Fultz combined for three goals but were unable to capitalize. The Ice Flyers added on more goal when Erik Stoyanovich (PEN) scored an empty net goal and finished off the âGators 4-1.
"We came out sluggish," answered IceGators Head Coach Kevin Kaminski, "and fell behind early. It is hard to come from behind when you get behind so early. We have to come out focused and ready to play tomorrow night."
Louisiana returns to the Dome on Friday, January 28 to take on the Pensacola Ice Flyers. The âGators remain at home on Saturday, January 29 when they host the Augusta Riverhawks. Don't miss your chance to bring a group to the game and take advantage of the 10 for 10 program. Groups of 10 can purchase tickets for $10. Call (337) 704-4423 for great season ticket and mini package opportunities, as well as the 10 for 10 program.
