LouCity Signs Norton Children's Patient Verhey to One-Game Contract
August 11, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Louisville City FC News Release
Ahead of this weekend's matchup with Rio Grande Valley FC, Louisville City FC signed Titas Verhey to a one-game contract in partnership with Norton Children's.
The 8-year-old, who suffers from a rare form of cancer, met the squad at training Friday before putting pen to paper on his deal. He'll be available for selection Saturday at Lynn Family Stadium leading up to LouCity's 8 p.m. kickoff.
"I am thrilled to welcome Titas to the team," said LouCity's coach, Danny Cruz. "This young boy is an inspiration to our entire organization. He is a fighter, and moving forward he'll know that my staff and his new teammates will always have his back. We're all looking forward to spending more time with Titas over the next few days."
Titas was growing abnormally fast and exhibiting signs of early puberty last summer when referred to Norton Children's. Doctors discovered a brain tumor and diagnosed him with optic pathway/hypothalamic glioma, a condition that often results in lifelong health consequences.
Titas, who's receiving chemotherapy at the Norton Children's Infusion Center, has blossomed despite his medical setbacks. Family members describe the rising second grader as a jokester who loves playing pranks - qualities he has in common with the LouCity locker room. Titas also enjoys gaming as well as reading mystery and action books.
"We are incredibly thankful for Norton Children's and Louisville City showing Titas so much love and support in his time of need and proving that he isn't alone in his fight," said parents Tiffany and Nathan Verhey.
The Verhey family lives in Fort Knox, Kentucky, where Titas' father serves in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his role with the team Saturday, Titas will be recognized at halftime as the Norton Children's Superhero of the Game - a fan-favorite opportunity to recognize those living life to the fullest despite obstacles in their way.
