LouCity Rises up the Rankings as Playoff Chances Increase

September 8, 2020 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Louisville City FC News Release

The race for the USL Championship playoffs is winding down with Louisville City FC in control of its destiny.

The boys in purple over the weekend jumped atop the Group E table with a victory at rival Indy Eleven, pushing their unbeaten streak to six games since the month of August began.

Likewise, LouCity is also rising up the USL's Power Rankings, advancing to fourth. Before commencing this undefeated run, the club had fallen as far as 19th of 35.

"LouCity is 5-0-4 against Indy Eleven in the Championship's regular season and postseason since Indy won their first meeting on May 5, 2018," the Power Rankings read. "No wonder the Indianapolis Star is calling them the Big Brother to the Boys in Blue."

Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, in third, is the highest-ranked Eastern Conference side. The Riverhounds hail from Group F, which will match with Group E to open the playoffs next month when respective No. 1 seeds play the 2s from both pods.

As for the chase for a postseason spot, LouCity's in the best possible position, but margins remain thin. The boys in purple have accumulated 20 points with five games remaining, one better than Indy Eleven and two more than Saint Louis FC.

LouCity hosts Saint Louis FC at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. As of now, according to the USL, the club has a 48% chance of finishing atop the group and 37% chance of finishing second. Overall, there's an 85% chance of making the playoffs.

"Look at your new favorite to finish on top of Group E," the league site reads. "LouCity's victory against Indy Eleven flipped the top two around, but there's still a lot of work to be done to get things wrapped up with Saint Louis only two points back. The Kings' Cup rivals meet on Saturday night in Louisville, and it should be a corker."

After Saturday, LouCity goes back to Indy on Sept, 16, hosts Memphis 901 FC on Sept. 19, plays at Saint Louis FC on Sept. 26 and closes the regular season against Sporting KC II on Oct. 3 at Lynn Family Stadium. The single-elimination playoffs then follow.
