LouCity Original McCabe to Extend his Tenure on New Contract
December 19, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Louisville City FC News Release
The USL Championship's longest-tenured player at a single club will continue his run at Louisville City FC with Niall McCabe having signed a new contract for the 2023 season, it was announced Monday. Terms of the deal, which is pending league and federation approval, were not disclosed.
McCabe returns after seeing his 2022 campaign cut short by injury. He was in fine form, numbering three goals and five assists, until aggravating his foot during warmups for City's Aug. 13 victory over the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
"When Niall was on the field this year, he was performing at a high level," said head coach Danny Cruz. "We are confident that his injury issue has been solved with a successful surgery and, when healthy, he is still one of the best midfielders in this league. We are looking forward to having him return as we believe he can build on his positive performances from 2022.
McCabe - whose professional career started with LouCity's inaugural 2015 season - has remained in Louisville ever since, going on to tally 177 regular season appearances in purple. That leads all active USL Championship players at a club and ranks third overall in league history behind only Taylor Mueller (200, Charleston Battery) and Kevin Kerr (183, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC).
A midfielder, McCabe has over the years helped fill LouCity's trophy case. He took part in back-to-back USL Championship title seasons (2017-2018) and contributed to four squads that won Eastern Conference crowns (2017-2019, 2022). The 32-year-old sits third on City's all-time lists for assists at 30 and minutes played at 12,859.
"First and foremost, I'm delighted to be back with this group," McCabe said. "It's a group I believe will achieve great things. I have a desire and hunger more so than ever to achieve after not being able to help at the end last year. Together with this group and these coaches, we can create an incredible chapter in the LouCity story book. I'm thrilled to be part of it and can't wait to hit the training pitch."
From Dublin, Ireland, McCabe first arrived to the United States to attend Young Harris College in Georgia. He now lives in Louisville's East End with his family: wife Ashleigh, son Luca and daughter Charlotte.
McCabe marks LouCity's 22nd and final returning player announced, with the number believed to be a record for a USL Championship club's roster year over year. Cruz and his staff continue to negotiate toward new offseason signings with updates to be provided in due time.
"When you look at the continuity in the roster after a record-setting year, we are continuing to build a roster that the club and community can be proud of and Niall is an important piece in that," Cruz said.
More information on the 2023 USL Championship campaign, such as the schedule, is expected after the new year. For now, season ticket memberships are on sale by visiting LouCity.com/tickets or calling (502) LOU-CITY during regular business hours.
