Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, has been added to the player's roster for The Looong Game Hat Trick, a 24-hour hockey game that completes a trilogy of marathon events aiming to exceed $100,000 for charities.

The Looong Game series has a rich history. In 2002, the original event raised $30,000 for charity and set a new Guinness Book Record for the longest consecutive hockey game. The Looong Game Classic, played in 2009 & raising an additional $36,000, was endorsed by Hockey Canada CEO, Bob Nickelson. The Looong Game Hat Trick will be played Dec 29-30, 2010 in the birthplace of hockey, Windsor, Nova Scotia, at Windsor's Exhibition Arena.

"I'm very proud to be part of two great Canadian traditions, hockey & generous community support," says MacKay.

This Looong Game will support 3 charities, including the Boys & Girls Club of Dartmouth, the Windsor Trust Fund, and the Canadian Cancer Society. Cancer survivor, Shawn Wells, is not only playing but is also the leading fundraiser for the event.

"Living with thyroid cancer over the past year and a half has helped me appreciate the advances being made in cancer research and the importance of this event in supporting that cause," says Wells. This will be the second Looong Game he has participated in but this one has a special significance.

This year's event will celebrate various forms of hockey during the 24 hour marathon game, and will include a demonstration by Acadia sledge hockey team, and a minor hockey coach's challenge. The game will start at 12:00pm on Dec. 29 with the singing of the national anthem by the Annapolis Valley Honour Choir, and will include special guests such as: Windsor Mayor, Paul Beazley; Q104's Bobby Mac; K-Rock's Colin McInnes; Hal of the Halifax Mooseheads; RBC Olympian, Andrew Russell, plus more.

Spectators will have the chance to shoot to win a 2011 Kia Sorrento from Kia Motors New Minas and a 2011 Ski Doo 1200 MXZ TNT from Full Throttle Power Sports. There will also be a silent auction with valuable items including autographed jerseys from Don Cherry, the New Jersey Devils and Sidney Crosby.
