Great Lakes Loons News Release

Bryan Morris fired five shutout innings and Jaime Ortiz blasted a two-run home run as the Great Lakes Loons defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks Friday night by a score of 3-0. The game was called by rain with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

With the game scoreless in the fourth inning, Jaime Ortiz homered to right field, his tenth longball of the season and his second in as many games.

Kenley Jansen gave the Loons a 3-0 lead in the fifth with a double to left-center scoring Francisco Lizarraga. Immediately following the double, the rains picked up in intensity forcing a delay and the eventual cancellation of the remainder of the game.

Because of the rain, Morris was credited with a complete game shutout, the first in franchise history and second complete game in franchise history. Morris faced the minimum innings through five innings, throwing 48 pitches.

The game was played in one hour, four minutes, the shortest game in Loons' history. The game included a one hour, seven minute delay.

The Loons (34-44 overall, 4-5 second half) continue their eight-game homestand Saturday night against South Bend. Saturday's game features a post-game fireworks show, powered by Dow Corning. Left-hander Thomas Melgarejo (1-3, 4.26 ERA) makes his second start of the season for the Loons. He will be opposed by 2008 Midwest League All-Star Jarrod Parker (5-3, 3.59).
