Big Sixth Inning Lifts Wizards to Win over Dragons

Fort Wayne, Ind.-The Fort Wayne Wizards broke a 3-3 tie with seven runs in the sixth inning on the way to an 11-3 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Friday night. The loss dropped the Dragons to 4-5 in the second half.

Robert Perry led the Wizards attack with a triple, double, and single. His triple that drove in two runs was the key hit in the Wizards' seven-run sixth inning.

Fort Wayne jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Dragons starting pitcher Matt Klinker. The Wizards collected four hits in the inning as a Dragons opponent scored in the first for the 11th time in the last 12 games.

The Dragons came back to tie the game in the top of the second. Denis Phipps was hit by a pitch to start the inning and stole second. With one out, Devin Mesoraco singled Phipps to third, and Kevyn Feiner followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. Justin Reed then drilled a home run to right, his seventh of the year, to tie the game.

Fort Wayne regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth against Dragons reliever Jeff Jeffords. Yefri Carvajal reached on an error by third baseman Brandon Waring to start the inning and went to third on Zach Brown's single to right. After Jeffords got the next two batters, Brad Chalk reached on an infield single as Carvajal scored from third to make it 4-3, and Robert Perry tripled to right to drive in Brown and Chalk to make it 6-3. After Jeffords walked the next two batters to load the bases, he was replaced by Curtis Partch. Andy Parrino greeted Partch with a three-run double to make it 9-3, and Carvajal singled to center to bring in Parrino and make it 10-3. Fort Wayne added one more run in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Jeffords (2-3) was charged with the loss. Six of the runs in the sixth inning were charged to Jeffords. All came with two out and were unearned.

Klinker, the Dragons starting pitcher, rebounded after allowing three runs in the first by following that frame with four scoreless innings. Over his five innings, he allowed three runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Dragons meet the Wizards again on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Daniel Guerrero (0-1, 16.87) will start for Dayton.

Notes: A post-game scoring change on a line drive to third that was originally scored as an error allowed Brandon Waring's hitting streak to extend to 13 straight games, tied for the fourth longest in Dragons history...The Dragons have hit home runs in 13 consecutive games.
