MWL1 Great Lakes Loons

Loons Pop Kernels

July 10, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - On Wednesday night, the Great Lakes Loons hit the road for just the second time this season ready to face the Midwest League Western Division. There was going to be no easing into a series against the playoff-bound Cedar Rapids Kernels and holders of a season-long eight-game win streak, but the Loons came to play and won the series opener 6-2.

The Kernels came into the contest with, by far, the best pitching staff in the league since the All-Star Break, but it was a Loons pitcher, Jose Martinez, that headlined the game. Martinez (W, 6-1) tossed a career-high seven innings while allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. He struck out six. Justin Hagenman finished the game for Great Lakes with two scoreless frames.

Martinez, a 20-year-old Venezuelan, has been an under-the-radar prospect this year in single-A. Since his 20th birthday on April 23rd, the right-hander has an ERA of 2.30 in 58 2/3 innings.

Outdueling Martinez early was West Branch, Michigan native Tyler Palm. Palm (L, 1-5) took a no-hitter into the fourth inning before a bloop (by Jacob Amaya) and a blast (by Dillon Paulson) tied the game 2-2. The Loons proceed to score four more unanswered runs, three of which came in the seventh inning, to secure a game one victory.

A series headlined by pitching between the Loons and Kernels rolls on Thursday night from Perfect Game Field with a scheduled 6:35 p.m. CDT first pitch. 2019 Dodgers draft pick Jack Little (0-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the ball for Great Lakes while Luis Rijo (2-5, 2.33 ERA) toes the slab for Cedar Rapids. Radio pregame coverage begins at 6:05 on ESPN 100.9-FM.
