Lookouts Steal One from Braves

July 5, 2007 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release

The M-Braves controlled this one until the seventh when Tyrell Godwin belted a pinch-hit two-run homer that put the Lookouts on top. Mississippi got the lead-off runner on base in every inning after the first, but couldn't get the big hit as they fell to Chattanooga, 4-3.

Mississippi got out to an early start in this one as the Braves scored twice with two outs in the bottom of the first. Brandon Jones, Wednesday night's hero, started the two-out rally by drawing a walk. The two-out walk hurt the Lookouts as Matt Esquivel then doubled off the wall scoring Jones to put the M-Braves on top. Diory Hernandez then lined a double down the left field line plating Esquivel and giving the M-Braves a 2-0 lead after one.

The Braves added another run in the second after Greg Creek and Clint Sammons got back-to-back singles to start the inning. Matt Harrison then sacrificed them over to third and second, respectively and J.C. Holt grounded out to second scoring Creek from third. After two, the Braves were up 3-0.

The Lookouts broke through in the fourth with two unearned runs. Jay Bruce led off with a walk and Enrique Cruz grounded to short. Cruz's grounder was misplayed by Hernandez at short allowing Bruce to move to third and Cruz to advance to second with no outs. Paul Janish grounded out to short scoring Bruce to cut the lead to 3-1. Cruz moved to third on a wild pitch and scored the Lookouts second run on a 4-3 groundout by Craig Tatum.

The M-Braves held the 3-2 advantage until the seventh when Tyrell Godwin belted a two-run, pinch-hit homerun that put Chattanooga on top 4-3.

Matt Harrison gave up two unearned runs on four hits through six innings of work. Zach Schreiber gave up two runs on a two-run pinch-hit homerun and suffered his fourth loss of the year. Brad Nelson threw a scoreless ninth.

James Avery gave up three runs on seven hits through 5.2 innings. Tyler Pelland threw a scoreless third and earned his fifth win of the year while Ramon Ramirez held the Braves scoreless through the seventh and eighth. Josh Roenicke held the Braves scoreless in the ninth and earned his second save of the year.

The Braves and Lookouts will play game three of this four-game series tomorrow night at Trustmark Park at 7:05. The Braves will send righty James Parr (2-1, 3.92) to the hill in search of his third win while the Lookouts will counter with righty Johnny Cueto (1-0, 0.69) who's looking to stay undefeated with his second win. At the turnstiles, the M-Braves will give away the third in a series of souvenir baseballs to the first 1,500 fans through the gate. After the game, fans can enjoy the usual Friday night Fireworks Extravaganza at Trustmark Park.

Braves Bites:

* Matt Esquivel doubled off the left-center field wall in the first driving in his 60th RBI of the year ... He's now two behind Brandon Jones for the Southern League lead ... He also scored his 59th run ... Esquivel is second in the league in that category. * Diory Hernandez went 3-4 raising his average to .318 and moving him up to at least sixth in the league in hitting.
