Long Balls, Raindrops Beat 'Stormers

July 25, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Long Island Ducks belted three solo home runs on Wednesday evening, and rain kept the Lancaster Barnstormers from their final chance to come back as the Ducks captured a rain-shortened, 3-1 victory in the first game of a planned doubleheader at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Play was halted before the Barnstormers could step to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning and was never resumed.

Rains washed out the second game which will be made at a later date.

David Washington homered over the batter's eye for his 11th of the season with two outs in the second inning off Jonathan Albaladejo (6-5). Lew Ford connected in the fourth taking a 1-2 pitch from the right-hander onto the Haller tent in right field. Taylor Ard hit the third blast, a drive onto the left field hillside leading off the seventh inning.

Otherwise, Long Island managed only four singles, all in their final two trips. Albaladejo walked none and struck out six before giving way to Matt Marksberry for the final two outs in the seventh.

The Barnstormers were able to match the Washington home run in the bottom of the third. Darian Sandford looped a single into shallow center and stole second. John Brownell (6-8) struck out Tyler Bortnick for the second out of the inning, but Blake Gailen lined an RBI single off the top of Washington's glove to plate Sandford for Lancaster's only run of the night.

Brownell went the distance, allowing six singles and two walks. He also hit K.C. Hobson with a pitch in the sixth inning. The Barnstormers advanced a runner into scoring position in five of the six innings but left seven runners on base.

The teams are slated to play a doubleheader on Thursday evening. Fans may tune into BRC 11 or the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning with the first pitch.

NOTES: Brownell's six strikeouts moved him to within two of Tim Cain for the all-time Atlantic League career record...He has struck out 735 with the Ducks...Albaladejo threw his ninth quality start for the Barnstormers...Sandford stole two bases, tying his total from last year with 45...He is eight away from Quincy Foster's Lancaster career mark of 98...The Barnstormers have stolen 126 bases in 75 games.
