Edenton Steamers News Release

EDENTON, NC - The Steamers (31-13, 13-5) hit four home runs and on two separate occasions scored six runs in an inning, cruising to the 14-3 win over the Wilmington Sharks (25-17, 9-6) on Friday at Historic Hicks Field.

Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) got the offense started against Aaron Hoover with his fifth home run of the season, a two-run homer three batters into the game that gave the Steamers a 2-0 lead. Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) followed with a solo home run, his eighth of the season, and it was 3-0 Steamers. After three walks loaded the bases Robbie Zinsmeister (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) knocked in two with a single and Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) brought home Adam Kirsch (Florida International University) with an infield single to make it 6-0 Steamers.

Mel Skochdopole hit a pinch hit home run in the top of the third off of Taylor Braun (Wright State University), his first home run and hit of the season for the Sharks to make it 6-1. On two walks and a single the Sharks loaded the bases with two out and then Braun hit Connor Mitchell to force home Aaron Preston to make it 6-2.

Edenton erupted for six more runs, this time off Scott Kerrigan, in the bottom of the third. Kirsch hit a solo home run, his first of the year to begin the inning. Kanzler tripled with one out and Michael Massi (Mercer University) knocked him in with a single. Three batters later and two walks later the bases were loaded and Blaise Fernandez (George Mason University) hit a grand slam and it was 12-2 Steamers. For Fernandez it was his second grand slam of the year, both have come against the Sharks.

Kirsch added an infield RBI single in the bottom of the fifth and the Steamers capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth when Kanzler was hit by a pitch and came around to score when Camporeale hit into a fielder's choice to make it 14-2.

Scott Coleman hit a solo home run of David Teasley (Mercer University) in the top of the eighth to make the final 14-3 Steamers.

Braun only lasted four innings, allowing two runs on three hits; he walked two and struck out seven. Matt Adams (Southern Poly Technic State University) pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win; he improves to 3-0 on the season. Hoover took the loss for Wilmington and fell to 3-3 for his one inning pitched. He allowed five hits and six runs (all earned) on three walks and no strikeouts.

Kanzler, Camporeale, Fernandez and Kirsch all had three hits apiece and Kanzler and Camporeale added three runs scored. Camporeale also had two RBIs to increase his league leading total to 33 on the season. Fernandez led the way with four RBIs and now has 29 on the season.

The Steamers, with their four home runs as a team, now have 40 on the season and sit just two shy of tying the franchise record for home runs in a season set in 2009.
