Lone Stars Go For Playoffs

August 11, 2004 - Intense Football League (Intense) - Lubbock GunSlingers News Release

This weekend’s game in Corpus Christi has major implications on the IFL standings and the chase for the Presidents Cup. The third place Lone Stars (8-6) will have the daunting task of trying to slow down the fourth place Hammerheads (7-7) in the ‘Shark Tank.’ The series is all tied at 1-1 and this one is for the tie breaker going into the playoffs.

A win for the Hammerheads would put them into a tie for third place with the Lone Stars and would give them the advantage in a playoff seating. A win for Lubbock would mean a playoff berth and a finish of no worse then third place.

Both times these two teams have faced off it has come down to the wire. The last time the two teams met on the gridiron the Lone Stars came out with a narrow victory in Lubbock after a late interception kept the Hammerheads from taking the lead.

In the first meeting in Corpus Christi the Lone Stars had the ball at the one yard line trying to tie up the ball game as the clock was winding down. A Hammerhead defensive lineman would bat down the ball as the time ran of the clock giving Corpus the 56-49 victory.

The Lone Stars have to face adversity again this week, after a tough loss to Amarillo this past Saturday, Lubbock will try to regroup and recover before getting on the bus for a 12 hour trip south.

Corpus is 5-2 at the friendly confines of the Shark Tank, loosing only to San Angelo and Odessa. The Lone Stars have not fared as well after exiting the bus on a road trip. Lubbock is 2-5 on the road and has only won at El Paso and at San Angelo.

The game will kick off Saturday at 7:05 in Corpus. The Lone Stars will then return home for the final game of the regular season against El Paso next week.
