Gunslingers Caught in the Crossfire-Will Forego Playing 2006 Season
Lubbock, TX, January 19, 2006 - With heartfelt regret Lubbock's own Professional Indoor Football Team, the Lubbock Gunslingers, announce today that they will not be playing in the upcoming 2006 season due to circumstances that have made it impossible to budget and schedule an effective football season.
Four former NIFL teams have left our league, and regional play, in order to re-start and re-form the previously defunct IFL (Indoor Football League), despite playing last season in the NIFL and having apparent contracts with the NIFL. As a result, the Gunslingers were left with only one original regional team to compete against. In addition, a lawsuit between the NIFL, the 4 teams and the IFL have impacted the scheduling of the 2006 season.
This, in turn, has caused the ownership group to make the difficult decision not to play this season. The team will continue to work with our sponsors, players, staff and local community throughout the year. Under the current conditions, the ownership group believes that this is the most responsible decision for the community, the team, and the other NIFL Member Teams.
The Gunslingers will keep a close watch on developments with professional indoor football and will continue to explore ways to keep professional football here on The Giant Side of Texas. We thank our sponsors, the City of Lubbock, the Chamber of Commerce and our fans for their wonderful support.
