Lively sold to Giants

San Angelo Colts News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Growing up a Los Angeles Dodgers fan in Susanville, Calif., Mitch Lively grew up hating the San Francisco Giants. But that will all change because the big right-handed pitcher's contract was sold by the San Angelo Colts to the Giants organization on Wednesday.

Lively, 6-foot-5 inches and 230 pounds, was signed by the Colts on June 20 after being released by the Colorado Rockies organization. He had no record with four saves in just 11 appearances with the Colts, allowing 11 hits in 12.2 innings, striking out 18 and not walking a single batter. He allowed runs in only three appearances, good for a 2.13 ERA with San Angelo.

"He earned the right for somebody to take a chance on him," said Colts manager Doc Edwards. "He had a great work habit and great effort and was very aggressive."

The 22-year-old, who was perfect in save opportunities with the Colts, reflected warmly on his time in San Angelo. "Great city, great fans," Lively said.

Taking just over a month to get signed since he was with the Colts, Lively was surprised about how quickly he was picked up. He was released by the Rockies after rehabbing an arm injury, and has picked up his fastball while with the Colts. After clocking in the high 80s in his first several appearances, he had reached as high as 97 miles per hour recently, throwing consistently in the low-to-mid 90s. He played last year with Casper (Wyo.) of the Pioneer League, the Rockies' rookie affiliate.

"I've been waiting for this moment since I got released from the Rockies," Lively said. "I just didn't think it would happen so fast."

Lively also credited Edwards for his success, saying that the 51-year baseball veteran was a big reason he was able to get picked up.

"I can't say enough about what he did for me," Lively said.

Lively is the first Colt this year to be signed by a Major League organization.

The Colts return home on Thursday, July 24 to begin a 10-game, nine-day homestand, starting with a Miller Lite "Thirsty Thursday," when 16 oz. bottles of beer are just $2. Advertising, ticket, and group information are available by calling the box office at (325) 942-6587. All Colts games are broadcast live on "Cool 100" - KCLL 100.1 FM and online at the Colts' official website, www.sanangelocolts.com, which is updated daily with the latest team news.
