San Angelo Colts News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - You could say the San Angelo Colts won by a fingertip on Friday night as San Angelo (31-21) escaped with a 7-6 win over the Laredo Broncos to complete a sweep of the Broncos (28-29) in front of 2,712 fans at Foster Field. The Colts, who never trailed in the game, recorded their third sweep of the season and are now 9-3 against Laredo this year.

With the bases loaded and nobody out in the top of the eighth inning, Colts closer Mitch Lively entered the game with the Colts leading 7-6. His 1-2 pitch to Steven Wright got by the catcher Wyn Diggs, but not all the way to the backstop, as Ben Tinius sprinted for the plate. Diggs recovered and flipped to Lively, who tagged out Tinius on his hand as Tinius dove headfirst into the plate. Lively struck out Wright and then induced Anthony Bennett to ground out to first to end the threat and preserve the lead. Lively stayed on for the ninth and faced another big jam with runners at first and third and one out. However, Arnoldo Ponce hit a check-swing line drive to first that was caught by Andres Rodriguez, who then stepped on first to double off Dwayne White, completing the game-ending double play.

Lively picked up his second save, preserving the win for Brian Henschel (6-2), who has won his last six starts. Henschel went 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Laredo starter Richard Bartlett (1-3) took the loss, lasting six innings, surrendering five runs, all earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and six walks.

For the third time in the three-game series, the Colts scored first as they took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Aaron Cone, who had 10 RBIs in the series. San Angelo scored one run in each of the first four innings against Bartlett as Charley Belew hit an RBI single in the second, Jose Torres scored on a wild pitch in the third, and Bryan Frichter hit a solo home run, his seventh of the year, in the fourth.

The Broncos got on the board in the fourth on RBI singles by Ponce and Tinius to make it 3-2 at the time. Laredo made it 4-3 in the seventh but the Colts scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-3. Rodriguez brought home a run with a single and Jason Crosland hit a two-run homer off of Rusty Jones, his sixth of the season. Laredo then scored three runs in the eighth before Lively came in. The first two batters of the inning reached against Miliade Venas and the next four reached against Alex Merricks. Two runners scored on a single by Tinius, the fourth batter of the frame, and pinch-hitter Matt Lawman walked with the bases loaded to force in a run, which is when Lively entered.

The Colts travel to Amarillo for a short two-game series beginning on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. CT. The All-Star Break begins on Monday, July 14 and the first ever All-Star Game between the United League and Golden will take place Tuesday night, July 15, at Foster Field in San Angelo, TX.
