DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Austin Listi homered twice in the series finale on Thursday night, but the Daytona Tortugas walked off with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to close out a series split, 6-5 at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Listi clobbered three home runs and walked seven times in the series, while Jose Gomez turned in his fourth straight multihit game and finished 9-for-17 (.529) across the four-game set. Mauricio Llovera turned in a strong start in the no-decision, giving Clearwater six innings of one-run ball.
Arquimedes Gamboa got Clearwater (26-32) a quick lead on Thursday, homering to left field on a 1-2 pitch for his first of the season. With one down, Listi followed suit by launching a towering fly ball over the wall in center to put Clearwater up 2-0.
Daytona (32-23) got one back in the second against Llovera, after Jose Siri led off with a double to left. Mitch Nay followed with a single to right-center to score Siri, and cut the Threshers lead to 2-1.
After a one-out single from Adam Haseley in the fifth, Listi launched one 404 feet down the left field line for a two-run home run, boosting the Clearwater lead to 4-1.
Llovera would exit after six innings, having permitted just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven.
Daytona rallied to tie it in the seventh facing reliever Blake Quinn, when a single and a hit batter set the table for Brantley Bell's game-tying three-run homer that brought the teams even at four.
Clearwater regained the advantage in the ninth, when the Threshers loaded the bases against Ryan Hendrix (2-2) on singles from Raul Rivas and Haseley and a walk to Listi. Hendrix induced a ground out and a strikeout, but walked Gomez to push home the go-ahead run and put Clearwater up 5-4.
JD Hammer (0-1) permitted a pair of one-out singles in the ninth, then got Shane Mardirosian to fly out to left for the second out.
On the first pitch, Bruce Yari singled to center to score pinch runner Hector Vargas with the tying run, and the throw from Haseley in center skipped past catcher Edgar Cabral for an error, permitting Bell to cross with the winning run.
The seven-game road trip continues as the Threshers head down to Port Charlotte to battle the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Friday at 6:35 p.m. Nick Fanti will take the hill in the opener, opposed by Willy Ortiz. The game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:20 p.m.
