Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Clearwater Threshers scored six unanswered runs to beat the Daytona Tortugas, 6-2, Wednesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. It was the second straight night that Clearwater scored the final six runs of a victory, with all six coming with two outs in an inning Wednesday.
The Tortugas got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning when Ibandel Isabel led off with a solo home run off of RHP Adonis Medina, his league-leading 13th of the year. It was the second straight night that Isabel hit a home run to center field to start the second inning for Daytona's first run, this time giving Daytona a 1-0 lead.
Bruce Yari followed with a walk, moved to second on a Mitch Nay double, and came in to score on a Brantley Bell sacrifice fly to left to put Daytona up 2-0.
The Threshers would answer with two-outs in the top of the third. Arquimedes Gamboa extended the inning with a double off the wall in center, the first Clearwater hit, and then came around to score Clearwater's first run on an Adam Haseley single to right. It was the first earned run RHP Tony Santillan allowed in 21 innings at The Jack.
Clearwater tied the game at two in the fourth, when Jose Pujols hit a home run for the second straight night.
In the sixth inning, the Threshers would take the lead and chase Santillan from the game with more two-out magic. Edgar Cabral extended the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a Pujols walk, ending Santillan's night. RHP Aaron Fossas came on to replace him and was greeted with a Raul Rivas two-run double to go ahead, 4-2. A wild pitch moved Rivas up to third, and he would score the Threshers fifth run on a Jose Gomez single to center.
The Threshers went up 6-2 in the top of the eighth. RHP Alex Webb walked Cabral with one out, then threw a wild pitch allowing him to move up to second. Cabral then moved to third on a fielder's choice groundout, and came in to score on a Bell throwing error.
Medina (6-2) becomes the second pitcher in the FSL with six wins, matching Daytona's Wennington Romero. He allowed three hits and two runs in five innings, while walking one and striking out six. Santillan (4-4) is handed the loss. He allowed four runs for the sixth time in his last seven starts, lasting 5 ?..." innings. He also walked a batter, hit a batter, and struck out four.
Daytona will send LHP Scott Moss (5-2, 4.62 ERA) to the mound in the finale on Thursday to face RHP Mauricio Llovera (2-4, 4.39 ERA) in a rematch from May 10th, a Daytona win.
First pitch Thursday is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:50 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
