Louisiana IceGators News Release
Pensacola, Florida--IceGators head coach Kevin Kaminski urged his team to be road warriors before they took the ice against the Pensacola Ice Flyers. His team delivered. One night after suffering their first loss of the season, the IceGators rebounded with a 3-2 victory. Brett Liscomb scored the game winner off a Kirk Byczynski assist with 2:02 remaining in the game.
The IceGators (3-1) return to the Cajundome Friday night for the first match of a two-game series against the Mississippi River Kings.
"That was the ugliest road win I've seen in my coaching career, but we'll take it" Kaminski said after the game. "I thought we were going to have a 4:00 A. M. skate after getting off the bus after blowing a 2-0 lead."
Matt Robertson scored the only goal of the first period on a powerplay at the 8:34 mark following an assist from Denny Kearney. Shawn McNeil followed with an unassisted goal midway through the second period. Pensacola (2-2) fought back and tied the score before the end of the frame thanks to goals from Tyler Soehner and John Dunbar. Both teams traded possessions and penalties in the third period before Liscomb scored the go-ahead goal.
After the game, Liscomb declined to take credit for the victory and gave it to goaltender Riley Gill, who stopped 37 of 39 shots during the game. "Gilly gave us a chance to win tonight," he said. "He came up with some big saves down the stretch. He did a great job in the net tonight."
Kaminski says his team has a long week of practices on the horizon. "Our wall, net front, and puck toughness have to get better through communication," he said. "We have a lot to work on this week. Everybody needs to be on the same page."
