Wichita Wingnuts News Release
KANSAS CITY, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts scored five in the first inning Wednesday and Jon Link fired seven scoreless frames to lead the visitors to a comfortable 9-0 win to sweep their three-game series with the Kansas City T-Bones at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
With one out in the opening frame, Wichita (9-11) began a stretch of four consecutive extra-base hits, starting with a Christian Stringer triple. Zack Cox and T.J. Mittelstaedt followed with back-to-back RBI doubles, then Dustin Geiger hit a two-run homer off Casey Barnes (1-3) to make it 4-0.
Following the homer, Brennen Salgado kept the frame going with a single, moving to second on an error. After a fielder's choice grounder from Brent Dean, Salgado kept running around third and scored to cap the five-run frame.
Wichita added to their advantage in the third as Dean took Barnes deep for a three-run shot, giving the Wingnuts backstop a career-high four RBIs, and stretching the lead to eight.
The 8-0 lead was more than enough for Link (3-2), who followed up a complete game in his last start with seven scoreless innings. The righty surrendered six hits and struck out six, and did not allow a hit after the fourth, retiring the last 12 T-Bones (8-13) he faced, part of the 15 in a row the Wingnut staff retired at one point.
Jesse Pratt followed Link, retiring Kansas City in order in the eighth, before Chad Nading struck out the side in the ninth inning in his Wichita debut, sealing the club's first shutout and sweep of 2016.
The final run of the day for Wichita came in the ninth. With two on and two out, Salgado doubled off the first base bag into the right field corner, scoring Stringer to make it 9-0.
The Wingnuts continue their seven-game road trip Thursday as they head south to Amarillo, Texas to begin a four-game series with the Texas AirHogs at Potter County Memorial Stadium. Thursday's series opener is set for 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
