
Lightning Reassign D Matt Smaby to Admirals

TAMPA BAY, FL - The Tampa Bay Lightning, NHL parent club of the Norfolk Admirals, have reassigned defenseman Matt Smaby to the Admirals, it was announced today by Lightning Executive Vice President & General Manager Brian Lawton.
Smaby, a 6-5, 220-pound native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, was recalled from Norfolk last Wednesday. He appeared in two games for the Lightning, going scoreless with two penalty minutes, six hits and three blocked shots. Smaby made his NHL debut with the Lightning last season, skating in 14 games. In 16 career NHL games, he is scoreless with 14 penalty minutes.
Smaby has skated in 19 games with Norfolk this season, recording two goals, three assists and 26 penalty minutes. The 24-year-old has appeared in 143 career AHL games between Norfolk and Springfield, tallying five goals, 21 assists and 135 penalty minutes.
Selected in the second round, 41st overall by the Lightning at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Smaby played three seasons for the University of North Dakota (2003-04 through 2005-06), captaining teams that reached the NCAA Frozen Four in consecutive seasons.
The Admirals' five-game road trip will conclude tomorrow evening in Hershey with a 5:00 p.m. meeting with the Bears.
The Admirals will return to Scope next week with contests against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on December 10 and against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on December 12 and 13.
