Stockton Lightning News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Spokane Shock used a 48-7 run over the final two quarters to win their 10th straight game of the 2009 regular season, sending the Stockton Lightning (4-7) to a 88-27 defeat before a crowd of 3,177 at Stockton Arena on Friday, in Week 12 of arenafootball2 play.
The 88 points scored by the Shock set a franchise record for most points in one game, which was also a Lightning record for most points yielded in one game. Playing with an injury-depleted roster, which included the losses of WR Etu Molden and DB Nathan Kenion, Stockton turned the ball over nine times - six on interceptions, despite mounting 245 kickoff return yards.
QB Nick Davila, who earned Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Game honors, threw for a 22-for-32 rate, 310 passing yards and seven touchdowns. WR Charles Dillon led all Spokane receivers with 10 catches and 122 yards.
Spokane capitalized on two interceptions and took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter after Davila found Dillon on a 13 yard touchdown pass, spelling Harrison Nikoloa's three-yard dash off the left tackle with 6:42 left. The Lightning finally got on the scoreboard when Chad Cavender zipped a 15-yard touchdown pass to Troy McBroom with 2:31 left.
On the ensuing series, Davila threw a 43-yard bomb to Raul Vijil for another touchdown to put Spokane up 19-7 after a blocked PAT kick, but the Lightning responded on a bomb of their own when Cavender found Justin Taplin for a 35-yard strike with 14:01 left in the second quarter, helping Stockton cut the deficit to 19-13.
The Shock embarked on a 14-0 run when Vijil snared a six-yard lob from Davila with 12:18 left, followed by Charles Dillon's two-yard scamper to put the Shock up 34-13.
Stockton cut the gap to 34-20 on Cavender's 31-yard bullet to Brandon Horace, who eluded a series of tacklers on a screen pass with 2:44 left in the first half, but Spokane put the finishing touches on their first half run when Davila's 16-yard lob to the left corner of the end zone found 6-foot-7 receiver Markee White with 11 seconds left to lift the Shock to a 40-20 edge.
Spokane continued their momentum with a 19-point third quarter when Davila hooked up with two touchdown strikes to Vijil and one to Dillon, sandwiched by a Cavender 10-yard strike to Horace with 3:56 left in the third quarter.
A 29-0 run in the fourth quarter helped Spokane put on the finishing touches, beginning with a Davila one-yard keeper with 12:48 left in the game. Backup QB Casey Hansen was summoned into the game and continued the scoring flurry with a 13-yard strike to Dillon with 9:23 left, followed by a 30-yard bomb down the right sideline to Markee White with 7:08 remaining.
Hansen slipped an 11-yard touchdown pass to Vijil in the right corner of the end zone with 50 seconds left to complete the scoring.
In spite of the six interceptions, Cavender completed 23-of-46 passes for 276 yards and four touchdowns, hitting Horace the most - the Lightning rookie receiver hauled in a career-high 11 catches, 142 yards and two touchdown receptions.
