Indianapolis Indians News Release
The Indianapolis Indians pounced on the Toledo Mud Hens Wednesday night behind the bats of Steve Scarborough and Jeff Liefer to defeat the Mud Hens, 10-3.
Liefer homered twice and picked up four hits and Scarborough collected three hits and a home run to lead an Indianapolis attack that produced 14 hits.
Liefer opened the scoring in the first with an RBI double. Then, Scarborough smashed a three-run home run in the second inning to give the Tribe a commanding 5-0 lead.
Tribe starter Ben Hendrickson (11-3) picked up the win, throwing five innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking none and striking out four. Hendrickson entered the contest leading the International League with a 2.03 ERA.
Dan Reichert earned his first save of the season, throwing three scoreless innings.
Indianapolis improves the record to 60-73, its second straight triumph. The Tribe returns to Victory Field Thursday for Fan Appreciation Night, meeting IL West Division leader Columbus at 7:00 p.m.
QUOTES:
Ben Hendrickson, Tribe winning pitcher:
"I wasn't thinking about my ERA until the fourth inning when they scored the run," said Hendrickson. "Actually, I would rather pitch in a 1-0 game. Then, I know that I've got to get each batter out and my mind doesn't wander too much. I had my plan tonight on how to attack the Toledo hitters. Stan (Kyles, pitching coach) told me before the game that I would pitch five innings, so I went out as hard as I could tonight."
NOTES:
The 10 runs scored by the Tribe was the first time since Aug. 9 against Columbus that the club scored in double figures.
Thursday is Fan Appreciation Night and a lucky fan will win a round-trip ticket for two to any destination in the continental United States, courtesy of ATA. Fans will also have a chance to win retro jerseys worn by the Indians players.
