San Angelo, Texas---Ira Liebman has been involved in professional baseball for eight years now, from A-Ball to the majors and has broadcasted games for most of that time. Ira who has been a Director of Community Relations as high as the Triple-A level and now serves as the San Angelo Colts Director of Community Relations, as well as serving as the team's play-by-play man. Liebman has donated a lot to charities over the years both locally and nationally. Ira has donated items like tickets, first pitches, autographs, pictures, baseball cards, but his own hair' That's right, the "Voice of the Colts" has been growing his now famous locks for two years and cut it off for the charity "Locks for Love". He did it on top of the home dugout as between inning entertainment on San Angelo's giant video board during the Colts game.
It began with a trip for two months to Guatemala in 2009 to learn how to speak Spanish, with his hair already a little to long he just figured he would get it cut when he got back to the states. Upon his return he was told about the charity and he decided to put off getting it cut to commit to growing his hair until it was at a good length to donate, which is now a foot long. "People always ask me aren't you hot with hair that long in Texas, but it doesn't bother me it has been fun actually having hair this length. It's been a while since I have had it this long probably since I left New York, plus I'm a big hard rock fan so it suits me anyway", said the Colts broadcaster. The charity for those unfamiliar with "Locks of Love" has people donate their hair as long as it is at least 10 inches long. It is to help return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. "It was something I could do for kids and it didn't cost me anything except for time. It is heartbreaking even to look at pictures of kids who have been threw chemotherapy and other problems, let alone to see a kid who has been through something of that nature in person. Cancer runs in my family so it has all been worth it to me and I am glad to help, even if it is on a small scale each day, which exactly what growing my hair for that time was".
