Edmonton Capitals News Release
Calgary, AB - The quest between the Edmonton Capitals and provincial rival Calgary Vipers for the North American League North Division title continued on Tuesday night with a double-header split at Foothills Stadium.
The Caps crushed the Vipers 14-2 in the late afternoon game but the home side rebounded with a 6-3 win in the nightcap. Since the Caps (52-30) have played two more games than the Vipers (51-29), the split puts Calgary back in first place with a slightly higher winning percentage, but there are no games separating the two teams in the standings.
First baseman Lou Santangelo and centre fielder Todd Linden each smashed home runs in the lopsided opening game, while Santangelo and right fielder Tom Collaro led the Caps with three RBI each. Linden and third baseman Enrique Cruz each crossed the plate three times, while Linden, second baseman Matt Rogelstad and catcher J.D. Closser each had two RBI.
The Caps got a complete game seven-inning effort from veteran pitcher Lou Pote, who scattered two runs and six hits while striking out seven Vipers to improve to 7-5 on the NAL season. The Sherwood Park resident continues to lead the league in strikeouts, as he reached 100 on Tuesday.
Rogelstad continued his hot hitting in the evening defeat with a home run, a double, a run scored and one RBI, while Linden and shortstop Rex Rundgren also each had two hits.
Starting pitcher Daryl Arreola was dealt the loss despite a decent effort, giving up six hits and five runs over five innings while striking out four Vipers. Tom Boleska came on in relief and surrendered one run in the sixth.
The Caps and Vipers play one more game in Calgary on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. before heading back to Edmonton for a five-game series running Thursday through Sunday, with a double-header slated for the final day of the regular season.
The Alberta squad in first place after the final six games will have home-field advantage in the North championship series between the Caps and Vipers next week. Game 1 and Game 2 of the best-of-seven series are guaranteed to be in Edmonton on Tuesday, Aug. 30 and Wednesday, Aug 31.
Thursday's series opener is the final Thirsty Thursday of the season, presented by Hudsons Canadian Tap House, 100.3 The Bear and 104.9 Virgin Radio, featuring beer on sale for $3.
The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer, featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Flex packs are available in multiples of eight for $48 less than day-of-game pricing. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
