The Greenville Liberty travelled to its first away match since May against its nearest geographical neighbor, Asheville City SC. Greenville layered on heavy pressure within the first eight minutes of the match and rained shots at the Asheville goalkeeper to no avail. Despite the flurry of attacks by Greenville, the North Carolina side found their own rhythm and eased into possession for the majority of the half. Greenville goalkeeper, Georgia Katsonouri made a crucial save midway through the half to keep the match scoreless, but in the 30th minute, a one-on-one against an Asheville forward led to the opening goal.
After the midpoint, Greenville itched to tie the 1-0 score favoring Asheville. The Liberty passionately tried to shift the momentum and refused to relent. In the 68th minute, a Greenville corner rebounded to veteran, Haley Schueppert's feet who with a brilliant touch chipped the N.C. keeper to tie the match 1-1. However, Asheville threatened on the other side of the pitch and soon capitalized off a volley in the box to move ahead 2-1 just minutes later. The Liberty welcomed one three subs in an effort to rally again, but time ran out and the score remained 2-1, Asheville. Greenville's defeat continued the club's losing streak, which sits at five with only three matches remaining.
The team will continue its three-match away series on June 17th against FC Carolinas at 3:00 PM. The Greenville Liberty will return home on June 28th for its 2023 Home Season Finale at 7:00 PM. Tickets are on sale now.
