Liberty Drops Game One to Las Vegas

On Sunday, the New York Liberty fell to the Las Vegas Aces, 82-99,in the opener of the 2023 WNBA Finals.

At Michelob ULTRA Arena, the Liberty finished on 46.4% (32-69) shooting from the field, 31.0% (9-29) from three, and 69.2% (9-13) at the free throw line.

Up Next: The New York Liberty will run it back against the Las Vegas Aces in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals on Wednesday, October 11, at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.

KEY RUNS

Q1: New York went on a 15-6 run from the 4:56 mark of the first to the 0:46 mark of the opening quarter.

Q2: New York extended their first-quarter run into the second quarter, totaling a 23-9 run through the 7:48 mark of the quarter. Las Vegas responded with a 10-2 run from the 7:35 mark of the second to the 4:07 mark of the first half.

Q3: Las Vegas went on a 14-4 run from the 9:23 mark of the third to the 5:22 mark of the quarter.

Q4: Las Vegas extended their third-quarter run into the fourth quarter, totaling a 20-8 run through the 7:20 mark of the quarter. Las Vegas went on a 14-5 run from the 6:47 mark of the fourth to the 3:22 mark of the quarter. New York recorded an 8-0 run from the 3:22 mark of the fourth to the 2:33 mark of the final quarter.

PLAYER NOTABLES

New York finished with five double-digit scorers in today's WNBA Finals game (Stewart, Jones, Johannès, Laney, Vandersloot), the third time this postseason.

Breanna Stewart totaled a team-high 21 points on 42.1% (8-19) shooting from the field, nine rebounds, and two assists.

Marking the 17th double-double of her postseason career and league-leading seventh double-double this postseason, Jonquel Jones finished with 16 points on 58.3% (7-12) shooting from the field, and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Including today's performance, Jones has recorded a double-double in every contest this postseason, setting the WNBA postseason record for the most consecutive double-doubles in a single postseason and extending her league record for the most consecutive double-doubles to start a postseason.

Her seven double-doubles this postseason are a franchise single-postseason record and the franchise career-postseason double-double record.

Highlighted by eight first-quarter points, including two makes from deep, Marine Johannès finished with 14 points on 55.6% (5-9) shooting from the field, including 57.1% (4-7) from three, three rebounds, and two assists. Her 14 points and four threes both marked a postseason career high.

Betnijah Laney totaled 11 points on 62.5% (5-8) shooting from the field, three rebounds, and three steals. Her three steals are a postseason career best.

At the 7:48 mark of the second quarter, Courtney Vandersloot moved into 2nd on the WNBA's All-Time Playoff Assists list, passing Lindsay Whalen. Vandersloot also recorded her 500th career postseason point in today's matchup. She ultimately finished with 10 points, including 40% (2-5) from deep, and a team-high six assists.

For Las Vegas, Jackie Young and Kelsey Plum each finished with 26 points and five rebounds, while Young also added four assists and three steals in today's Game 1.
