New York Liberty News Release
NEW YORK, NY - The New York Liberty has acquired 2015 second-overall pick center Amanda Zahui B from the Dallas Wings, Team President Isiah Thomas announced today.
In exchange, New York is sending its 2017 1st Round pick to Dallas. In addition to Zahui B, the Liberty receives Dallas' 2017 2nd Round pick.
"With the addition of Amanda Zahui B, we have addressed our needs in the frontcourt not only for this season, but for the future of the franchise," said New York Liberty head coach Bill Laimbeer. "Amanda is an exceptional talent, and at 6-5, her offensive abilities are unique for a player her size. She will immediately make us a more dynamic team on the offensive end of the floor, while her skills as an interior defender complement our defensive identity."
Zahui B averaged 3.4 points and 2.4 rebounds per game in 31 appearances during her rookie campaign in 2015, while displaying the ability to knock down 3-point baskets and block shots. She shot 33.3 percent (12-of-36) from 3-point range and also averaged 0.6 blocks per game, including a career-high five against San Antonio on June 14.
At the University of Minnesota, Zahui B was named the 2015 Big Ten Player of the Year, when she was also a First-Team Associated Press All-American. She averaged a career double-double of 16.9 points and 12.2 rebounds per game, and posted a pair of triple doubles during the 2014-15 season. Zahui B is a Swedish national, born in Stockholm, and raised in Sweden prior to beginning her collegiate career at Minnesota in 2012.
The Liberty's historic 20th WNBA season opens on Saturday, May 14, when it will travel to Washington, D.C., to face the Washington Mystics at 7 p.m. New York's home opener at Madison Square Garden, presented by Kia Motors, will be on Sunday, May 15, against the Dallas Wings at 5 p.m.
