Lewis's Suspension Runs Eight Games

North Bay Battalion News Release

NORTH BAY, Ont. - Centre Jamie Lewis of the North Bay Battalion has been suspended eight games by the Ontario Hockey League for an anti-doping rule violation, it was announced Wednesday.

The violation is the first for Lewis, a resident of Richmond Hill, Ont., who turns 20 on Aug. 22. Lewis tested positive last May for methylhexaneamine, a prohibited stimulant. During the playoffs, Lewis submitted to a urine test conducted under the auspices of the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport.

Methylhexaneamine is banned in competition by virtue of being on the World Anti-Doping Agency's Prohibited List, which is recognized by the Canadian Hockey League. In Canada, methylhexaneamine can be found in supplements but is not an ingredient in medications licensed by Health Canada.

"It's an unfortunate learning experience for Jamie and all our players," said Stan Butler, Battalion director of hockey operations and head coach. "It was an over-the-counter product, and what it' s teaching the kids is that even if it's something you buy over the counter you still have to talk to the trainer and make sure these things don't happen."

In announcing the suspension, OHL commissioner David Branch said Lewis and the Battalion were "extremely cooperative."

"We are completely satisfied that the player used a supplement which he had purchased over the counter at a local retail outlet and had no knowledge that it contained a prohibited substance," said Branch.

Butler said he believed the banned substance was contained in a product called 1.M.R, for " One More Rep."

"It was something that' s supposed to make your workouts easier, and the kids assume that because you can buy it at a health food store it' s okay, but that isn't always the case. Our trainer, James Borrelli, is up-to-date on that stuff, and the players need to speak to him. In some cases the ingredients in these products aren't even on the label, so you need to be careful."

A third-round pick of the Niagara IceDogs in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection, Lewis was acquired by the Brampton Battalion in a trade on Oct. 7, 2011.

He had 19 points, including six goals, in 63 games a rookie and contributed 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points in 65 games in 2012-13. In the Troops' first season in North Bay, Lewis played 67 games, scoring eight goals and adding 17 assists for 25 points. He added five points, including two goals, in 21 playoff games, scoring the goal that secured a four-game sweep of the Oshawa Generals in the Eastern Conference Championship Series.

Overage candidate Lewis is eligible to return to the lineup for an Oct. 23 home date against Oshawa.
