August 16, 2018 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
After winning in dramatic fashion Wednesday night in extras, the Intimidators used a dominant outing from Zach Lewis and 10 runs to take the second game of the three-game series with the GreenJackets, 10-1, Thursday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Atrium Health.
After zeroes on the board for both teams through three innings with brilliant pitching from Lewis (W, 3-5) and Garrett Cave (L, 5-8), the Intimidators were the first team to break the scoreless streak. With one out in the fourth inning, Steele Walker reached on a five-pitch walk, followed by his second stolen base of the night to put him in scoring position.
After a Tate Blackman walk two batters later to put runners at first and second, Michael Hickman smoked a ball up the middle to score Walker for the game's first run.
After a 1-2-3 inning on the mound for Lewis in the fifth, Ramon Beltre connected on his first homer of the season on a moon-shot to left-center, giving the I's a 2-0 lead. Up next, Tyler Frost extended his hit-streak to six games with a single, followed by a Curbelo single to put runners at first and third with no outs.
Next up, Walker connected on his second hit of the day, bringing in his first RBI of the season to give the I's a 3-0 lead. After Walker's second stolen base of the night, Craig Dedelow hit a weak groundball to first base with Curbelo at third, but Curbelo got a good enough read off the bat to come in to score the fourth run of the game for the Intimidators.
With Lewis picking up his fifth strikeout in the fifth inning, Hickman walked to lead off the frame, as Justin Yurchak slapped a double down the left field line, scoring Hickman to give the I's a 5-0 lead. Next up, Beltre doubled on a blooper over the second baseman's head, scoring Yurchak for Kannapolis' sixth run. One batter later, Frost reached on an infield single to the shortstop, putting runners at the corners for Luis Curbelo.
On the sixth pitch of his at-bat, Curbelo grounded out to short but scored Beltre on the play to give the Intimidators a 7-0 advantage. Next up, Walker reached on a throwing error by third baseman Jacob Gonzalez, keeping runners at first and second for the I's.
After a walk to Dedelow and a pitching change that brought Orleny Quiroz to the bump for Augusta, Blackman doubled on a ball down the left field line, scoring Curbelo and Walker for the eighth and ninth runs of the game for the Intimidators. Two batters later with Hickman batting, Dedelow scurried home on a wild pitch from Quiroz to extend the lead to 10, 10-0.
Lewis exited the game after the seventh inning, giving up only one run on four hits, including seven strikeouts on 83 pitches.
The Intimidators will look for the series sweep Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Intimidators Stadium supported by Atrium Health with LHP Drew Harrington (7-6, 5.18 ERA) on the bump.
