NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Thanks to a phenomenal pitching performance by starter Sean Leland (Orland Park, Ill. / Louisville), the Vermont Mountaineers defeated the North Adams SteepleCats, 4-0, at Joe Wolfe Field on Friday night.
With the win, Vermont improves to 11-9 and surpasses North Adams in the Northern Division standings, as the SteepleCats fall to 11-10. The Mountaineers now sit tied with Laconia for second in the North, as the two teams sit just one half game behind the first place Valley Blue Sox. Vermont has now won three straight.
Leland dealt seven innings, allowing no runs on three hits and one walk. He struck out eight en route to improving to 1-0 on the summer.
The Mountaineers scored all four of their runs in the fifth inning. First baseman Simon Rosenbaum (Los Altos Hills, Calif. / Pomona-Pitzer) connected on a one out double to center field, kick starting the Vermont offense. Third baseman Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville) knocked an RBI single up the middle to score Rosenbaum and give Vermont a 1-0 lead. Designated hitter Thomas Roulis (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Dartmouth) roped a double to right-center field to move Clemons to third. Leftfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) followed with the hit of the game, a two RBI triple down the right field line to score Clemons and Roulis and give Vermont a 3-0 edge. After Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay) walked to put runners on first and third, catcher Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla. / Maine Orono) smacked an RBI single to score Parenty and make it 4-0 Mountaineers.
Reliever Colton Davis (Commerce, Ga. / Western Carolina) threw two perfect innings of relief, including three strikeouts.
