Kitchener Rangers News Release
Joshua Leivo scored the game-winning goal leading the Kitchener Rangers to a 2-1 victory over the Brampton Battalion Sunday afternoon. Max Iafrate also scored for the Rangers in their final trip to the Powerade Centre.
The Rangers opened the scoring at 13:58, capitalizing on their first power play opportunity. Max Iafrate's point shot flew by a screened Matej Machovsky, giving the rearguard his third of the season. Kitchener native Derek Schoenmakers and draft-eligible forward Justin Bailey were credited with the assists.
Kitchener led shots on goal 12-7 through the first period.
Joshua Leivo lifted the Rangers to a two-goal lead with less than five minutes to play in the middle frame. Veteran power forward Ben Thomson dug the puck out from behind the net, finding the Toronto Maple Leafs prospect in the slot. Leivo lifted a shot high over Machovsky for his 26th of the year and seventh since arriving in a trade last month. Tobias Rieder also picked up an assist, his third point in two games.
The Rangers continued to out-shoot the Battalion in the second period, holding a 14-13 advantage.
Brampton cut the Rangers' lead in half early in the third period. Netminder Joel Vienneau turned aside Marcus McIvor, but Barclay Goodrow pounced on the rebound in the crease and pushed it into the back of the net, earning his 32nd goal of the year. Francis Menard was also credited with a helper on the play.
The Battalion led shots on goal 8-5 in the third, but the Rangers finished ahead on the shot clock 31-28. Vienneau made 30 saves to secure his 11th victory since being traded to Kitchener.
With the win, the Rangers improve to 35-7-1-7 this season.
