Clearwater Threshers News Release

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Mark Leiter Jr. struck out a career-best ten batters on Thursday, but the Clearwater Threshers suffered a 3-1 to the Dunedin Blue Jays in the final match-up between the two teams in 2014.

Leiter and Blue Jays starter Taylor Cole traded zeros through the first two and a half innings, combining for ten strikeouts between the two hurlers.

Dunedin (26-27) struck first against Leiter in the bottom of the third.

After the Threshers' righty set down the first six men he faced, striking out four of them, LB Dantzler singled up the middle to open the third. Gustavo Pierre followed with his seventh homer of the year to put Dunedin ahead 2-0.

The Blue Jays would add a third tally in the frame when Christian Lopes and Nick Baligod connected for back-to-back doubles.

Clearwater (22-31) responded with a run off Cole in the fourth.

Brandon Short walked on four pitches to lead off, and Harold Martinez stepped in and ripped the first offering he saw to the warning track in dead center for an RBI double.

Cole (8-6) finished having allowed one run on four hits while striking out nine for Dunedin in the win.

Leiter (2-4) was charged with the loss despite a solid outing. After the three-spot in the third, he did not permit a run the rest of the way. The righty worked 6.2 innings and surrendered three runs on nine hits without walking a batter, striking out a career-high ten batters. His previous best was nine, set on June 19 while with Lakewood.

Clearwater returns home on Friday for a three-game set against Lakeland, kicking off on '90's Night at Bright House Field. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m., and a post-game concert with OTown will follow the conclusion of the contest. The call can be heard live on the Threshers' broadcast network beginning at 6:15 p.m.
