Leiter Dominates Stone Crabs in 5-0 Victory

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Mark Leiter, Jr. became the fifth pitcher to toss a complete-game shutout in the Florida State League this year as the Clearwater Threshers defeated the Charlotte Stone Crabs, 5-0, at Bright House Field.
Leiter (2-1) worked out of a jam in the ninth after surrendering a one-out triple to Tommy Coyle, but struck out Leonardo Reginatto and Patrick Leonard to end the game.
The right-hander needed 106 pitches for the five-hit shutout. He struck out eight batters and did not issue a walk.
Leiter allowed leadoff men to reach in the second, fifth and seventh innings, but was able wiggle out of trouble in all three frames without allowing anyone else to reach base.
Clearwater (12-17) struck in the third off of Jeremy Hellickson (0-1) when J.P. Crawford collected his second hit of the game with a one-out single. After Art Charles reached on an error to put two men on, Brian Pointer doubled to right, scoring Crawford and Charles to make it a 2-0 game.
The Threshers added two more runs in the fourth after Chris Serritella and Corey Bass doubled to lead off the inning. Bass moved to third on Angelo Mora's fielder's choice and Crawford singled him home with two outs.
Serritella went for extra bases again when he lead off the sixth with a triple. The Threshers' first baseman would score on an RBI single to second by Roman Quinn.
The Threshers will take on the Stone Crabs (10-19) in game two of a four-game set on Monday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and can be heard live on threshersbaseball.com starting with Threshers Live! the pregame show at 6:45 p.m.
